Degenerative Joint Disease

Degenerative Joint Disease or Degenerative Disc Disease

Both describe the same condition the only difference is location. DDD or Degenerative Disc Disease is specific to the disc shaped joints of the spine. DJD or Degenerative Joint Disease is the same process but can refer to any joint in the body.

What is DJD?

Degenerative joint disease is the uneven or premature wear of a joint in relation to the joint around it. Over time this continues to wear down the joint further and further causing more and more pain and dysfunction as the process progresses.

How does DJD happen?

DJD starts by uneven wear patterns cause by poor posture, poor body mechanics, injury or misalignments. In the short time period they will not be noticeable, however after 5 or more years they became more and more apparent until the problem must be addressed.

How can chiropractic help?

By properly aligning the joint we can stop the excessive wearing on the joint and the joint can begin to heal. By keeping the joint in alignment throughout the treatment plan you chiropractor can slow down and even reverse some of the wear in some cases.

Do I need surgery?

In very advanced cases where a patient has worn the joint away completely and is bone on bone, it is possible the patient may need surgery. In this case the chiropractor can refer you out for proper imaging and to the appropriate provider.
